88 FILMS ITALIAN COLLECTION SERIES - DISC 27 - IRONMASTER

The Podcast Under the Stairs presents our next instalment of The 88 Films Italian Collection Series.

IMG_55D54902B26F-1.jpeg

Welcome to the next instalment of our sub-set of show exclusively looking at the Italian Collection releases of 88 Films.

88 Films have, for the last 3 years or so, have been on a tear releasing a torrent of Italian genre classics in high definition. I have been purchasing them and it should be no surprise to anyone, I have left them pretty much unwatched (what can I say...I'm a compulsive collector).

In order to watch the movies I buy, and of course create some quality content for you all Under the Stairs, I will be running through each of the movies on this bonus series between 1-2 movies a month depending on the TPUTS schedule.

So strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of alleged plagiarism, zombies, gore, rape, genital mutilation, sexism, revenge, gialli, cops and robbers, cannibalism, sci fi & more bush and titties than an annual subscription to Penthouse magazine.

Disc 27 is back to the world of Umberto Lenzi in this puzzling caveman romp. Historically absurd but with a maestro behind the lens and with Italian cinema’s greatest villain George Eastman in tow, lets see what Duncan makes of Ironmaster (1983).

The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It

Ironmaster

Duncan: 3

Disc 26 has this reviewers most underrated Italian genre director, Sergio Martino, back helming a weird cooking pot of Escape from New York & Mad Max Road Warrior with character designs from Power Rangers in a little slice of awesome called 2019: After the Fall of New York (1983).

The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It

Disc 24 is back with a very notorious character in Italian cinema…the late great Joe D’Amato. In 1979 this director pushed the levels of what was acceptable in cinema with Beyond the Darkness, a movie so crazy that trying to find a true narrative amongst the gore, cannibalism, nudity and necrophilia is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It

Disc 23 brings us back to the collective body of work of the Godfather of Gore himself, Lucio Fulic. Very late in the mans career he took on a project which is part Carrie, part Patrick and part rival Argento’s Phenomena…and all parts tonally wacky AF in AEnigma (1988).

The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It

Disc 22 sees the return of cannibals to the collection!! In a late attempt to make the genre relevant again Michele Massimo Tarantini brought his action take on Romancing the Stone to the cannibal tribes of Brazil…oh yeah and slave traders…don’t forget them too, in Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (1985).

The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It

So strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of alleged plagiarism, zombies, gore, rape, genital mutilation, sexism, revenge, gialli, cops and robbers, cannibalism, sci fi & more bush and titties than an annual subscription to Penthouse magazine.

Disc 20 is a full on Italian slasher rip-off in all the ways you will hope it is if you are a fan of Italian genre cinema!! Absurd (1981) has George Eastman stalking and slashing the residents of a small American town whilst pursued by a avenging clergyman (who we will just call Loomis to save confusion). Director Joe D’Amato returns to the directing chair in this spiritual sequel (in name only) to 1980’s Anthropophagus: The Beast. Absurd (1981) is a video nasty that needs to be seen!!

The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It

Disc 19 is a hybrid giallo/gothic horror/mystery confusingly set in Scotland. Does the many supernatural mysteries and lush settings bring it home with a memorable entry in the collection or are we in for a hodge-podge of nonsense? Duncan reviews Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eye (1973).

Disc 16 is back to the world of poliziotteschi with Mad Dog Killer (1977) which cinephiles will know for its tiny appearance in the back of a scene in QT’s Jackie Brown. So lets dive in and take a look at a movie that has the propensity to glamorise its villainous central character.

Disc 15 is a frustrating little movie that was sued by the owner of Alien and then went on to sue the makers of The Descent...its weird rip-off unofficial sequel time as we look at Ciro Ippolito's Alien 2: On Earth (1980).
