Don't Believe The Skype!
skype.jpeg

So a while back just before Christmas we had to cancel one of our recording sessions due to cataclysmic technical issues with my recording and Skype setup, and not for the first time in recent months it has to be said.  Basically I was using my new Blue Snowball Mic and I noticed that as soon as I started to talk the recording level would increase of its own accord until it hit maximum levels at which point the audio was in the crapper.

Now to put you in the picture, my recording setup is as follows: Blue Snowball Mic (recently purchased for me by the Ayatollah, prior to that it was a generic USB recording mic), Windows 10 laptop, Skype for Windows for talking to Duncan and Audacity for recording my vocals tracks.  All of this had worked fairly seamlessly until I introduced the new mic (which would later prove to be a red herring).

After much googling with very little success we ascertained that the problem was a setting within the Skype to "automatically adjust microphone settings".  If this is ticked it allows Skype to adjust the levels and in my case to keep upping them until the laptop shat itself.  Glad to have found a solution I raced off to test it only to discover that the new version of Skype no longer makes that option available to the user, in fact many of the more advanced audio controls are now gone.  Cue complete and utter meltdown or Bazmageddon if you will.

microsoft.jpg

At this point all hopes of recording were abandoned and I was genuinely considering whether or not the whole thing was really worth the stress it was causing me.  The point of me starting to use Audacity had been to try and eliminate some of the sound quality issues we had experienced when Duncan would record the whole show direct from our Skype connection.  Would we be better just going back to that?

This situation dragged on for a few weeks until I mentioned it to my office-mate who also has a background in recording.  He set about investigating the issue on my behalf and eventually came across ONE solitary forum post that happened to mention the new Skype App and its associated feature loss.  He sent me a link to what was referred to as classic Skype and suggested I try installing that instead.

Now a month or so previously I had received a message within Skype asking if I wanted to try the new version of Skype which was specially optimized for Windows 10 compatibility.  Assuming this was just their latest upgrade I clicked Yes and installed it.  Turns out this wasn't actually an upgrade to my existing Skype instance, but was actually a separate install of a new App which was in line with Microsoft's push towards a more Apple inspired architecture in Windows 10.

Using the link I had been given I installed classic Skype onto my laptop with no problem and it happily sat alongside the App with no conflict whatsoever.  I fired it up and lo and behold I was able to access all of the old sound settings and sure enough the "automatically adjust microphone settings" tickbox was ticked.  I immediately unticked it and ran some tests.

All of my recording level issues had vanished.

And there you have it folks, as ever Microsoft have tried to improve one of their core applications by making it markedly worse, to the point that is practically unusable to anyone other than a retired schoolteacher who wants to talk to their grandkids in Milwaukee once a month.  So don't be fooled into installing this piece of shit, it's not worth the effort or the minor stroke you will suffer trying to do anything with it.

Fuck you Microsoft, just FUCK YOU!!!

So here we are...the end of another fantastic year of The Podcast Under the Stairs!!

2017 was such an incredible year for both myself and the show I started 4 years 3 months ago.

Designed by Joshua Kelly of J-Monster Art

Firstly let me say that 2017 was our biggest year yet and saw us drop our Year 4 Baz v Horror Podcast Poster designed by the incredible Joshua Kelly. In recordings we covered a whopping 195 movie reviews over 78 recorded shows & commentaries!! Duncan also covered the entire Beyond the Walls Shudder TV Series.

17352485_10154624088526843_3965801208415073070_n.jpg

Of those 78 episodes and 195 movie reviews, The Baz covered 33 movies in his 16 appearances this year.

The Baz even got his dream of a sea of listeners adorned with his Baz Flag t-shirt.

We covered Gialli, Slashers, Werewolves, Ghosts, Possessions, Exploitation, Anime, Modern & Classic titles as well as 4 horror franchises in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Baz v Leatherface) and Hellraiser & Sleepaway Camp in our new Russian Roulette Franchise Retrospective and finally a look at the House franchise with the new Arrow Video boxset (feat. Andy Blockley).

The Summer Top 10 Series was the most downloaded and most ambitious series to date as we looked an entire decade and reviewed 100 movies released in the 1970’s over 11 episodes.

I started a new subset of shows called In Reverence and now it's 3 episodes strong following the movies that inspired and shaped my love of horror not to mention Challenge TPUTS and our always fun movie club which covered 7 movies in 2017.

crunch-the-numbers.jpg

Now to get geeky, techy and all numerical, we have had a total of 55,495 downloads/plays from our Soundcloud feed THIS IS HUGE!!! It shows a 67% increase from 2016’s total of 33,222.

Now from our Legion feed we brought in 13,428 downloads bringing the total overall downloads in 2017 of TPUTS episodes to 68,933.

31 Days of Halloween 2017

Welcome to the Blog Under the Stairs!!

tv-sucks-by-kmls.jpg

So summer is over...Our summer TPUTS Top 10 series is now officially done, dusted and committed to the podcast archives which means Autumn is now with us and the return of Duncan's 31 of Halloween!!

Every year, along with so many other Horror fans, I tackle the 31 of Halloween challenge watching a horror movie each day in October (this isn't much of a feat for me as I watch on average one horror movie a night anyway)...my twist is that I only watch horror movies that were released in the UK in the year of the challenge...so only horror movies from 2017!!

I was asked by some listeners this year if I would publish my list ahead of time so hence this blog post!!

So here we go!!

So play along if you like and I will be posting some weekly roundups and some mini reviews as the month goes on!!

12 July 2017 - I Shudder To Think

Ola my sexy little blog-reading bitches!  It's the Baz here to pollute your eyes as well as your ears.

For my first blog post I've decided to focus on a subject close to my heart and regale you with a story from my weekend.  Settle down at the back, I am of course talking about video streaming services.  More specifically I'm talking about specialist horror streaming site Shudder.

I first became aware of Shudder a month or two after it launched in the UK courtesy of our glorious leader who I suspect was probably subscriber number 4 or such like.  I signed up shortly before we recorded our Baz v Rob Zombie show as most of the movies we were covering on the show were available on the site.

Now it has to be admitted that the UK version of Shudder does not have  a huge range of titles available (it is improving every month however) but those that are on it are generally of a high quality and unavailable on other platforms and their selection of short films is genuinely excellent.

My main complaint however was that it was not available via the Amazon Fire Stick which is one of the leading TV add-on devices in the UK at present.  To be frank I found the situation baffling.  I then found out fairly recently that you could add Shudder as a "Channel" to your Amazon Prime subscription allowing it to be accessed via the Fire Stick, so last Saturday I sat down to try and link my Shudder account to my Amazon account.

Turns out "problematic" doesn't even begin to describe that process.  "Physically impossible" is in fact a better description as the only way of doing it is to cancel your original Shudder subscription and take out a new one via Amazon.

By the time I discovered this fact hidden way down in the FAQs page on Shudder I was utterly apoplectic and stormed off to bed muttering about money-grabbing corporate whores and the like.

It appears however that the Amazon's invasive home technologies must have been monitoring my rantings because the very next morning I awoke to an email from Shudder proudly proclaiming the a new Shudder app had been added to Amazon's app store which would allow existing Shudder customers to access the service via the Fire Stick.  Mere minutes later I had downloaded it, stuck in my login details and was happily watching a skinless man making sheet-ruiningly sticky love to his surprisingly ungrateful girlfriend.

Panic over, disaster averted and no-one had to die.

If you've not checked out Shudder in the UK I would highly suggest you do so as it's getting better all the time and it's now available on just about every platform you could wish for.

See y'all when you're less dressed!

Baz.

11 July 2017 - The Power of Updates Compels you

Welcome to the Blog Under the Stairs!!

Well hello dear listeners/readers!!

It's all systems go at the moment over at TPUTS HQ with the planning of our Summer Top 10 series of shows now beyond the planning phase and into movie viewing and scheduling the recordings!! The first episode is less than 2 weeks out and for 11 episodes we will be doing what they call the impossible, in a recording idea and schedule that might finally turn me into Sam Neill at the start of In the Mouths of Madness!!

All Work And No Play..yadda yadda yadda Sutter Cane and such like!!

All Work And No Play..yadda yadda yadda Sutter Cane and such like!!

If all that wasn't enough...we have more Baz v Horror to plan as well!!

The very first Baz v The Masters of Horror isn't a million miles away either as The Baz certainly has a date with a double bill of macabre Miike madness in his diary!!

I'm not sure what will happen ladies and gents, sufficed to say that I think I speak for the entire class when I say that Baz v Audition will be an experience we might never hear again!!

In the meantime, I had the fantastic opportunity to guest over at The Little Pod of Horrors last week and verbally gushed for 2 hours on my favourite horror movie of 2016...The Neon Demon!!

It's a movie that sparked a lot of debate on the TPUTS facebook page but I have remained mostly silent about...until now!! When that episode comes out you will hear the mental anguish and joy that has broken and fixed my brain since my first viewing back in October 2016 and the synapse threads that are still tangling themselves round the cold case mind-map board of my psyche.

A huge thanks to Boz for having me on the show and keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page and other social media's for details when that show drops!!

We have some cool news on the horizon with regards to a potential live appearance of both myself and The Baz at an upcoming event which we are still confirming details on...however when I know something you can bet your sweet ass that you will to!! It's a fun concept and if the stars align then we will be there!!
